My Visit to Ai Weiwei “According to What” Exhibition

Today I went to see the exhibition of Ai Weiwei – ‘according to what’, curated by Brooklyn museum. I don’t really like all of his work, but the following ones are exceptions. For example, this one, themed with ‘moon chest’, is consisted of seven rectangular boxes, each of which has four holes, two on the top on both sides and two in the middle. The positions of holes vary by each box. So if viewing from one hole, you may see a consistent crescent moon shape, it is basically an optical art.

This is the piece touches my heart, which is about Wenchuan Earthquake that happened in 2008. As we all know, the fragile construction was the major reason that caused a huge loss of lives in this earthquake (based on the artist, nearly 90k people died). The steel bars here represent those fragile buildings. On the wall there are the names, grades, ages and addresses of 5,000 primary and junior high school students who died in this earthquake. The artist collected all of these names at his own cost. I’m sure you can imagine how much harsh work he paid for this! I don’t think I can even collect a completed contact list of my own friends. Every single life deserves respect regardless how young it is.

The theme for this piece is “River Crab”, which has the same pronunciation with “Harmony” in Chinese. Another smart piece of the artist’s work! If you understand China you shall understand what this means.

Parsons School of Fashion BFA Final Static Show.

Parsons School of Fashion BFA Final Static Show. After seeing the MFA show last week you will see the differences between MFA and BFA. Sorry for not including the names of designers this time as I forgot to record names. The cutting structure of the side seam of this piece is very interesting.

This is not my favorite one but it has some features. One of the judges in last week’s final thesis presentation commented that red was the most risky color for clothes. Clothes in red either sell the best or the worst. The reality turns out to be the same. Designer has to be very careful when using red for large space.

1

I think this piece would have a better market if it is either on plain black fabric with rhinestones or colored striped fabric or having strong contrast of graphic patterns without rhinestones. I don’t know whether it is because of the problem of cutting or of the mannequin, the clothing devoids of a soul.

2

The printing on the felting fabric is quite interesting. But it still makes me feel need a bit more improvement in design. There could be more innovation in the cutting. Having said that, the texture and color of the fabric is pretty nice.

3

This dress is very nice. Its design is not so surprising but it would sell well. Unfortunately the picture does not show much details

4

Laser cutting is in vogue. The fabric of the orange part is made of woven bags.

5

The graduation works of fashion marketing students are also on display. The projector is playing interviews of students while there are several ipads in the room in which viewers could check details of their works. On the wall there are final presentation of the merchandise planning that covers storyboard, color board and merchandise planning. This merchandise planning is very much like the one in the real business world. Of course, the line in a real company is much larger.

The night of May 21st, 2014 would be the BFA fashion benefits show of School of Fashion at Parsons. Diane Von Fertenburg, Jason Wu and other leading figures of high fashion houses would be there. This is one of the most magnificent annual events in the school. Prices of tickets range from 1000 USD to 10,000 USD, which would be donated as scholarships for students in the future. Stay tuned!

1

Liquid box. The top layer is made of Polyester and under it, the color part was made of Chine de crepe.

2

Beads collection by a Chinese student.

3

Oversized silhouette, texture of the fabric especially with laser cutting are popular.

4

Again oversized silhouette, unfinnished hems, irregular cutting are in vogue. MFA are more for conceptual development.

5

Nice prints. It takes a while to figure out how to wear it

6

Again as u see, oversized scale heavy metal look beads. Every part is exaggerated but still wearable.

7

Again unfinished trimming.

8

“I am who I am.” Oversized but cropped jackets. Every details are exaggerated, the waist, the bow, the color block. Nice color coordination – very clean color. By a Chinese student. One of the best in my view.

9

Oversized scale O shape. Laser cutting embroidery. Mix of knitwear and silk, heavy and light fabric, opaqueness and transparency. It is worthy of notes that many people think Parsons are strong in creativity but not technology, in fact Parsons students are also very good at craftsmanship. Students are obligated to make all garments by themselves except for the small parts that may need special equipments or trimming. I would say Parsons strength lies in its balance of creativity, marketability and craftsmanship that is why their students are popular in the job market.

10

Check the details – very good yarns and craftsmanship. Mix and match are still popular. Woven and knitwear, heavy and light, wildness and delicacy, three dimensional and flat, all are displayed here. Speaking of techniques, there are great use of laser cutting and 3D printing in this graduation presentation.

Parsons MFA Fashion Design and Society final exhibitions are all held at places provided by big companies. This year, it is in the headquarter of Gucci. Last year, it was in the place sponsored by Diane Von Furstenberg. The first year was supported by Donna Karen. In New York, there are certain industrial advantages – students are able to do interns in high-end designers brands. Chinese colleges do not have such convenience. The one on the left with a pair of glasses is the head of Fashion Design College, Simon Collins. Former head Tim Gun was the one held Project Runway and after his term, he went to Liz Claiborne. Simon was from Nike but he joined Nike after I left there. So we missed each other in a sense. The middle one which is the CEO of Gucci is said to be able to speak Chinese. The one on the right is the director Shelley Fox, graduate from central Saint Martin College of Arts and Design. She is the student of the famous teacher, Louise Wilson.

12

I love fashion not only because it beautifies our life but also it identifies people and shapes and mirrors the society. At fashion party the most interesting part sometimes is not the show itself but the audience.

New York, New York (1)

Started a new journey in the Big Apple! This was a show for graduate students of Fashion and Society at Parsons. Parsons is one of the best fashion institutions indeed – most of these graduates’ designs are good enough to enter the market. Their works show strong personal styles but are also very practical; they can just wear their designs to go to work/school! lol

An interesting course at Parsons: learning how to critically coment on fashion design through the study of literature. They learn about how writers contruct the meaning of something, say, cigarrete. A cigarrete has a short life because it will be thrown away immediately after use; usually, cigarrete users also have a relatively shorter life. Meanwhile, cigarettes are companions to the smokers; they make the smokers feel warm and bring a sense of security, especially when people are alone at night. Cigarette is also a way of socializing, particularly among men. Some become friends by asking for a light. The brand of cigarette can signal certain social class.

An excellent writer can construct numerous meanings out of a single piece of cigarette. The same goes for fashion design. Being a fashion commentator is analyze the stories behind a design in a unique and multi-demensional perspective. It is not about how the designers create it, but how the viewers understand it. An excellent design needs no words to express itself – it resonates with the audience at heart.
